I'm not familiar with Mott's Market. Why is it so special?

For more than a century, Mott's Market has been part of daily life on Capitol Hill. It's where neighbors stopped for groceries, a forgotten ingredient, a cold drink on a hot day, or simply to catch up with familiar faces. When the market closed in 2022, neighbors came together to preserve not just a building, but a neighborhood institution. Today, Mott's has reopened with expanded offerings while remaining true to its role as a community gathering place.

What is Mott's Neighborhood Market?

Mott's Neighborhood Market is the community ownership group that purchased the Mott's Market property in 2022. Rather than allowing the building to be sold for another use, dozens of neighbors came together to purchase, renovate, and preserve it as a neighborhood market. Today, the building continues to be community-owned, while day-to-day operations are managed by local entrepreneur Peyton Sherwood and his team.

Why should I invest in Mott's?

Investing in Mott's is about more than supporting a neighborhood business. It's an opportunity to become part of a community ownership model dedicated to preserving one of Capitol Hill's historic corner markets. Your investment helps ensure that Mott's remains locally owned, financially strong, and focused on serving the neighborhood for generations to come.

Why are you still looking for investors if the market is open?

Opening the doors was a huge milestone, but community ownership is an ongoing commitment. Additional investment strengthens the long-term financial foundation of the property, supports future improvements, and helps ensure Mott's remains community-owned for years to come.

Who started this initiative?

The effort began with a handful of neighbors talking on their porches after learning the market would close. What started as a simple conversation quickly grew into a neighborhood-wide movement. Together, neighbors formed Mott's Neighborhood Market, raised the capital to purchase the building, and worked over the next several years to renovate and preserve this Capitol Hill institution.

Who operates the market?

Mott's Market is operated by local entrepreneur Peyton Sherwood and his team. Peyton shares the community's vision of creating more than just a convenience store. Today's Mott's combines the neighborhood staples people have always relied on with fresh food, coffee, wine, and inviting spaces where neighbors can gather.

What happened to the upstairs apartment?

The upstairs remains a residential rental unit, just as it has historically.

If the previous market closed, what makes this one different?

The new Mott's builds on the strengths of the original market while expanding what it offers. In addition to groceries and convenience items, the market now includes coffee, prepared foods, wine, outdoor seating, and community gathering space. These additional offerings create a stronger business model while preserving the neighborhood character that made Mott's so beloved.
